Changae SONG (송창애) Artist Biography

Artist Statement

‘Isugwanji (以水觀之)’, which means ‘Looking at the world through water’, is a
core idea that passes through the entire artworks of Chang-Ae Song. Water is not only a material for all her works, but also a creative expression technique. Furthermore, water is a vessel containing her conceptual and emotional implications in it. Since her artworks are drawings with a material of water, her waterscape series is a product of intuitive and sensory experience of the origin and nature of life for her, which envisions the prototype of existence through the metaphor of water. Her expression technique called 'water drawing', is creative since she creates images by directly spraying flowing water to erase and wash the background color. It is the basis of her original artworks since this formative method is based on the oriental philosophy, which emphasizes 'Huh(虛)' which means empty space in mind, space, and
time. With her own original expression technique, she intends to express this oriental philosophy as a modern formative realization of traditional concept.
